Are Overdentures the Best Option for Your Mouth?

Your teeth are an important part of your mouth. They allow you to eat all kinds of foods and to be understood when you speak. When you suffer tooth loss, these crucial roles are greatly affected. False teeth can restore your ability to both eat and speak properly. There are many different types of false teeth available. One popular option is overdentures. How do you know if they are the best option for you?

What are Overdentures?

Overdentures are a version of dental implants. The implants are titanium rods that are surgically placed into your jaw. These rods are the anchors that hold gum supported removable dentures. They can be used for a partial or a full denture.

Requires Sufficient Bone

In order for implants to be successful, your jaw needs to have sufficient bone mass. When you lose teeth, the jawbone begins to deteriorate. Implants integrate with your bone; without enough mass, they won't be stable. One of the advantages of implants is that they act similar to a tooth root, helping to stop or even slow bone loss, preserving the integrity of your jaw.

You Have Problems with Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are supported by your gums and are held in place by dental adhesive. While they can be successful as replacement teeth, some people have issues with them.

Regular dentures are less stable. They are more likely to move around and slip out of place when you eat or talk. They can even fall out completely.

Dentures also don't stimulate your jaw like implants do. And without anything in your jaw, the bone deteriorates. This ultimately changes the shape of your jaw, meaning that your dentures, over time, will no longer fit properly and will need to be replaced.

Overdentures are an excellent option when it comes to replacing missing teeth. Contact our office to find out if they are the best option for you.
