Porcelain Onlays Can Help You Keep Your Natural Tooth

Posted on 4/15/2016 by Keith M. Cooper
A woman happy with her new smile that was repaired with porcelain onlays. With advances in dental technology, there are a variety of options out there that can help you to restore your teeth after damage, trauma, or decay.

While there are many solutions that can help to improve the appearance of your tooth, some involve grinding down and weakening the natural structure before the restoration can be put into place. If you prefer to conserve your natural tooth as much as possible, porcelain onlays might be a good option for you.

Why Should You Choose an Onlay Over a Crown?

A dental onlay is a piece of porcelain that will sit over the damaged portion of your tooth. The onlay will rest over a small part of the tooth, helping to strengthen it rather than compromising the remaining, natural tooth.

They can last for just as long as crowns without needing to grind down or shape the natural tooth any further, which happens when a crown is put into place. With a crown, the natural tooth needs to be shaved so that the crown can fit into place, thereby weakening the natural tooth structure.

What's the Big Deal about Conserving the Natural Tooth?

There are several reasons that you'll want to be concerned about preserving the natural structure of your tooth. When your natural tooth is kept intact, you'll get a stronger foundation for your onlay.

Aggressive restorations that involve further trimming down the natural tooth don't tend to last as long and will eventually need to be replaced - however, if the tooth was compromised too much initially, it might not be strong enough to hold up after a second procedure.

Ultimately, whether a crown or an onlay is the best option for you will depend on your unique situation and the extent of your damage. Contact our office to find out if an onlay can help to restore your tooth.
