Can I Whiten My Teeth if I Have Crowns?

Posted on 2/15/2016 by Keith M. Cooper
A diagram of how a dental crown works. If you are thinking about whitening your teeth, but have dental crowns in place, you may want to hold off and first speak to your dentist. Why, you ask? Well, dental crowns aren't porous, so they will resist treatment. If you whiten your teeth, you could end up with teeth that do not match in color, as the crown will remain the original shade while the rest of your teeth may look lighter.

When you had your crown put into place, your dentist would have carefully matched the shade of your natural teeth to the shade of the crown.

At first, this may have looked great, but over time your natural teeth could have stained and became darker in color. This could create an unbalanced look in your mouth, because again, the color of the crown would not have changed with the rest of your teeth.

If the discoloration of your natural teeth is bothering you and you want to improve the appearance of your smile, talk to your dentist. Depending on the number of crowns that are visible when you smile, you could have them remade to match the altered color of your teeth.

This means that you would whiten all of your teeth and then a new crown would be made to match the new, brighter shade. Additionally, you could also consider investing in veneers, as this cosmetic option would eliminate the need to consider whitening your teeth, as your entire mouth would look the same.

The best thing that you should do in this situation is to talk to your dentist. They likely have a good idea of what is going on in your mouth and can make recommendations on how to get a more beautiful smile right away. Contact our office to discuss your options today.
