How to Eat Healthy after Oral Surgery

Posted on 6/25/2015 by Keith M. Cooper
Three fruit smoothies beside each other. The first few days or even full week after oral surgery is often spent eating soft foods. After pudding, Jell-O, and ice cream get boring, you will likely want something else to eat; especially something healthy! Before you start bringing on the ice cream shakes, try these simple ideas to fill you up and keep you healthy while your mouth heals.

Fruit smoothies are a great choice because they are cold, healthy, and delicious! Go ahead and experiment with different types of fruits and even veggies in your smoothies! A basic starter is low-fat Greek yogurt or regular yogurt and ice. From there, you can add whatever you like to make the flavor fit your needs. Strawberries, mangoes, bananas, spinach, kale, and peanut butter are just a few ideas of what to add to your smoothie.

Soup that does not have large chunks of meat or veggies is a great way to get some nutrition after surgery. Try tomato soup, chicken broth, or any of your favorite broths to fill you up and keep you satisfied as your mouth heals.

Eggs can be consumed after the first few days following surgery. Make sure they are cooked enough to be very soft and are in small pieces so that you can mash them with your tongue rather than using your teeth. Eggs are a great source of protein which can help you build up your strength as you recover.

The first 48 hours following surgery is the most crucial and when you should avoid most foods that are not liquid. After that, however, you have many options of soft foods to enjoy!
